Savvy elk hunters know that staying as still as a stone may allow a bull to walk right past you and offer a great quartering away shot.
As you will see in this video, sometimes they don’t keep walking.
Ironically, the same thing happened to me in Montana. I sat at the base of a thin pine tree as my guide cow-called behind me. Suddenly, I saw movement 200 yards down a trail. Soon a big bull elk emerged. I waited for the bull to step from the trail to draw my bow, but it came as if pulled by a rope. The beast stood two yards behind me for what seemed an eternity. I could hear its breath, its stomach gurgle, and its hooves crack pine needles.
Eventually, the bull caught me moving. The ending was much like the one shown here. Enjoy.
