Whether you’re a seasoned turkey hunter with several species under your belt or a newcomer seeking extra excitement from the git-go, a Gould’s turkey safari is a grand adventure you will never forget. Several years ago I hunted with El Halcon Outfitters in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico and still consider it one of the top hunts of my life. After an intense morning of cat-and-mouse encounters, my guide finally called in a big longbeard, which I killed with a muzzleloading shotgun. The next day, I struck out on my own to take a monster tom with a bow and arrow. That bird was so exciting I could barely sleep a wink the entire night.
Gould’s are aggressive and can cover half a mile coming to a call. The subspecies is large and beautifully plumed, as you will see in this Field & Stream video. A Hazel Creek decoy (made from a real turkey) is irresistible. Just watch!
Gould's Turkey Hunting in Mexico
"At the end of the day, turkeys don’t follow rulebooks. They’re all vulnerable to the same tactics—and you can mess up on any of them with the same mistakes." —Will Brantley, hunting editor
