Winter is finally here and sneaked in through the back door.  As the winter of 2017 embraces the New Year, Atlanta has had more snow than Buffalo, New York.  Cold weather is a relative term, yet no matter where you live, keeping kids properly dressed is important to having fun outdoors and keeping them healthy.  This post from Gear Junkie speaks to that subject exactly, so read on to make the most of cold weather.

Wee-to-Teen

Give older children a choice in what they wear.

Last fall I encountered two extreme situations for which children were perfectly dressed.  The elk season was barely half an hour old when we rode past a young couple climbing a mountain on foot.  As I glanced down from saddle-height, I was amazed to see a young woman with an infant poking it’s head from her coat.  The lad or lass wore an orange hat which made it perfectly legal and an image I will remember until I die.

Later that morning I saw two orange hats emerge across a steep ravine.  Soon two hunters climbed toward my position and half an hour later, a father and his “tween” daughter came puffing to my position.  We talked for a few minutes and they continued on, the gal wearing her designer jeans.

Dressing Kids for the Cold

One element of dressing children for cold weather is reaching an agreement about how warm they need to be.  If you will be active for a short duration, they may need minimal insulation.  This Gear Junkie post will include some excellent choices, yet maintain the “layers” approach for best results.

Honestly, there are some mornings I look outside and think, “Maybe we should just stay inside today.” It would be so much easier. But, inevitably, after a few minutes, my adventurous self gets the best of me, and we are headed out the door all bundled up and ready to brave the elements.

No matter how long it takes to get ready, I never regret it once we’re outside. Because kids and babies are just like us (or are we just like babies?) — they love to be out in the fresh air.
