Pennsylvania’s elk herd offers an incredible hunting opportunity for the lucky individuals who draw a license; and it’s an important economic and educational initiative as well. Each year, thousands of visitors seek out Pennsylvania’s elk country for the rare opportunity to see elk in an Eastern wild habitat. The interest has been so great that the Keystone Elk Country Alliance will now bring the elk to you. (Well, almost.) The Keystone Elk Country Alliance is a leader in Conservation Education in Pennsylvania. We were proud to launch our Distance Learning Program that allows us to take Elk Country to any classroom, civic group or interested learning center in not only Pennsylvania, but the United States and world. Below are some quick facts about our program.
– Using Information Technology to advance learning: launched in 2013
– Hurdling geographical and funding constraints of school districts
– Provides hands-on, interactive learning while students are still in their classrooms
– Grade-level curriculum guidelines utilized in accordance with existing academic standards
– Expand opportunities to positively impact students everywhere
– Help cultivate within each child a “sense of connectedness” to nature
– All lessons and presentations are multi-sensory and engaging
– Prior to pre-scheduled distance learning (Skype technology) session, teacher receive a large elk “traveling trunk” containing large elk pelt, antler, variety of skulls and other bones, bison horn, ruminant hoof models, telemetry collar, and other items
– Teacher binder contains comprehensive Academic Standards Alignment and originally created master worksheets for student duplication
– Each student receives an original educational activity book for curriculum reinforcement
– KECA’s Distance Learning initiative has so far reached over 1,000 elementary and secondary students to enhance their Science and Ecology curriculum goals
– 16 different PA counties have participated
– Ready to expand to additional counties and out-of-state
– Students from public, private, parochial, and charter schools have been taught
