Notoriety is usually bad for big bucks, especially if its antlers are the size of a small elk.
“Buck Norris” was such a deer that lived — thrived, actually — in an urban environment where the mere sight of its giant antlers brought joy to many. No doubt many a hunter dreamed of seeing a buck like Norris in the nearby mountains, yet the same habitat that allowed the deer to age to double digits eventually did him in. Bend, Oregon’s famous non-typical mule deer is no longer with us. A vehicle collision claimed this favorite of wildlife watchers and residents.
“ODFW staff in the Bend area and statewide are saddened by the loss,” ODFW spokesperson Michelle Dennehy said in a statement. “Unfortunately, vehicle-wildlife collisions happen throughout Oregon and are more common around high density areas and in the Bend/central Oregon area in particular. While Buck Norris’ habit of staying within Bend city limits helped protect him to an older age, it finally put him at risk.”
A year ago Oregon Dept. of Wildlife officials placed an ear tag on Buck after freeing him from heavy wire he had gotten caught in.
Buck was estimated to be nine or ten years old.
