The Pope & Young Club maintains a record-keeping system for North American animals killed with bow and arrow. The club’s namesakes, Saxton Pope and Art Young, were two pioneers in the sport of bowhunting. They made their own equipment — bows, arrows, and broadheads — and demonstrated incredible skill in taking small, large, and even dangerous game at a time that few believed archery gear capable of the feat. Today, the Pope & Young Club maintains a scoring system for big game animals, publishes a book of those scores, and acts as the ethical conscience of bowhunting. Their first e-newsletter went out to a core group of 10,000, but you can easily add your name to the list.
“The Pope & Young Club is very well known throughout the bowhunting industry,” said Joe Bell, P&Y Club executive director. “However, this recognition revolves mainly around trophies and record books. But this is just one facet of why the Club exists. The Club was intended to care for the sport of bowhunting and encourage conservation…both profound and meaningful causes.”
“We are placing a high priority on increasing communication with the bowhunting public. This is the premise behind the Ethical Bowhunter, the Club’s brand-new monthly e-newsletter,” said Bell. “The newsletter will go out to every contact in our database, including all members and trophy-record participants, in addition to a large number of Club supporters and sponsors. This launch will allow us to share with a wider audience the Club’s mission.”
