“Aging” a buck at a glance is a valuable skill, one that many guide schools teach hunters to develop.
Knowledgeable whitetail guides can easily earn $1,000 a week if they can age whitetail deer accurately and estimate how its antlers will score on the Boone & Crockett scale.
Many whitetail management properties don’t want animals harvested until they are at least 4.5 years old; some ask for 5.5 before a hunters pulls a trigger.
When a hunter spots the biggest buck he’s ever seen, he’s anxious to make the shot and it takes a skillful guide to tell him it’s not age-appropriate.
