Deer hunting requires a lot more skill and knowledge than many people think. Sure, a person can buy a rifle, head into the woods, and have a buck walk in front of him. Beginners luck happens, but future hunts will turn out very differently, unless the beginner learns a few deer hunting skills. Deer hunting secrets can be illusive.
Listen to Science
Deer hunting lure passed down from generation to generation doesn’t always pan out. For example, deer research reveals that bucks travel about the same during a full moon as a new moon. I’ve read this conclusion, yet scratch my head because it seems directly contrary to my experience. I recently hunted in South Dakota during a full moon and despite our crack-of-dawn posts, saw few deer moving, while we had much better success later in the day.
Gotta Be There
Josh Honeycutt chose these seven important secrets based on his personal research and deer science. As a deer editor for the Realtree website, deer hunting tips are his business as well as receiving many comments from readers.
One simple, yet important tip, is never giving up. My South Dakota hunt came down to the last few minutes when my guide suggested we check a harvested field before throwing in the towel. Ironically, a mature 8-point buck was standing by the field entrance, not 20 yards from our truck.
“There he is,” whispered my guide and I tried to open the passenger door and sneak around the vehicle for a shot. I spooked the deer which I expected to bound into the open field. I counted on my new Bushnell scope to give me the light advantage despite the fading light.
Sneaking to the field edge, the scope performed perfectly, yet the wily buck chose to hug the brush-line and stayed out of sight. I ate my tag, but learned an important lesson.
