Putting out a deer feeder may sound like a no brainer whether you’re planning to hunt or just observe deer. You can disseminate corn and minerals in small amounts that will be consumed over time and build a pattern of visiting the site. However, compressing deer into small feeding areas is also a recipe for easy disease dispersion, which is why several states ban the practice. A ban on deer feeding and hunting over bait in Eau Claire, Clark and Jackson counties will take effect Aug. 1 after a doe died of chronic wasting disease at a Fairchild area deer farm, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
