An African plains game safari is the best economic value in hunting. Perhaps that’s a bold statement, yet I’ve made more than 20 safaris and found the deal can’t be beat. Even at this date, it’s not too late to plan a safari for this year. Here are some reasons why.
Exchange Rate
At this writing the exchange rate of the South African Rand is about 13.5 to 1 US dollar. Ten years ago, the rate was 7:1. That means that every dollar an outfitter receives from a US client, he can get double value on local goods and services. You will want to do some tourism events on your trip which is where the exchange rate really shines.
See Europe on the Way.
The long flight from the US to South Africa is a deterrent to many would-be safari hunters. It shouldn’t be. If you have never been to Europe, fly through the country of your choice and add an extra vacation. I arranged for a group of hunters to take a tour of a local city during their layover in Germany. They visited several breweries, got a quick tour of the city with a friendly guide who provided transportation, all for $75. Most International cities off day tours for travelers and the details are only an internet search away.
Get there for Free
More than half of my safari airfare tickets were earned with credit card miles. United Airlines is offering 50,000 bonus miles for using their credit card and you need 80,000 for an air mile ticket. Personally, I’m an air-mile fanatic and use my credit card for every purchase I can. When I buy a $1 sweet tea from McDonald’s, I’m one air mile closer to Africa.
Plan for Next Year
The best way to book a safari is to do it in person at a hunting show. The Safari Club International held annually in February is the best, but regional shows often have African outfitters. Get a couple of buddies together and talk with the safari operators directly. The more hunters in your party, the more bargaining power you will have. I routinely advise safari travelers and will be happy to help you by contacting TheHuntingPage.
