As summer weather arrives, savvy archers begin a regular regimen of practice to build muscle strength and develop the accuracy skills needed for precise shots on big game. Center-fire hunters can do the same in a slightly modified form by practicing with a pellet gun or .22 that simulates the basics of aiming, squeezing the trigger, and demonstrating consistent accuracy. Additionally, shooting off-hand helps to develop the hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills necessary at the moment of truth.
Gamo recently displayed their new Whisper Fusion Pro Air Rifle at the NRA annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky and I was quick to pick one up and ponder the possibilities. First, I live in a neighborhood that is overrun with squirrels, and both the .177 and the .22 are ideal for pest control and squirrel hunting. Additionally, I have neighbors nearby, so the more quietly I can control pests and practice, the better. The Whisper attachment helps keep my business my business.
The rifle cocks with a single movement and the 33 mm cylinder provides ample power to shoot a .177 caliber pill at 1400 fps, about twice the speed of sound. It has a two-stage Smooth Action trigger with a manual safety that’s easily operated. The stock is made from an all-weather synthetic tipped with a butt plate that absorbs most of the little recoil produced by the rifle.
The rifle weights 8 lbs., which is ideal for accuracy and helping to build my shooting muscles. Since I can practice in my backyard or basement, weight only adds to accuracy and I can’t wait for my new rifle to arrive. Backyard critters beware!
