Human breath has always been the weak link in the scent elimination process. Each time we exhale, the scent of our breath spreads into the wind, and there isn’t much you can do about it — until now.

SD Muzz Deer 2015 008I experimented with the RZ Mask on a recent hunt and shot a mature buck at 20-yards. I can’t say that the reduction in my breath directly concealed my location, yet it surely didn’t hurt. Additionally, temperatures were brutal (around zero) and the mask performed a second important function — body insulation. The mask is designed to allow most exhaled air to escape so that condensation does not form inside the mask. However, a portion of warm breath is contained and, when inhaled a second time, helps warm the body.

I had someone demonstrate a similar product at a show where I was asked to step into a zero-degree chamber while dressed in street clothes. His special mask was designed to recycle warmth from human breath and by inhaling the heated air, I was able to stay warm without heavy clothing.

The RZ Mask fits comfortably and the nose adaptor is adjustable for a fit that’s adjustable. You want it tight for scent-elimination purposes and loose if you just want to keep the wind from your face and obtain the insulating value of heated breath. It’s so light that I often forgot which pocket I carried the mask in. Models come in camouflage for archers and blaze orange for firearm seasons, snowmobiling, and other winter activities. For more information visit rzmask.com.
