Ruffed grouse are an amazing species. Their explosive flush has nearly soiled many a sneaking hunter as they slip silently through thick cover only to have an explosion of feather and thunder erupt at their feet. Sometimes grouse flush at great distance and getting within shotgun range is very difficult. At other times, they may explode under foot in cover so thick that a hasty pointed shot is all an upland hunter can manage.
Passionate About Grouse
The Ruffed Grouse Society is a conservation group dedicated to the conservation of the species and its members are as passionate about keeping populations high as about the hunt. Tim Flannigan of Bedford Pennsylvania is a prime example. As a former Pennsylvania Conservation Officer, he loved grouse hunting so much, he decorated his Christmas tree with grouse feathers.
How Did He Hold Still?
This video is amazing for a number of reasons. Can you imagine having a ruffed grouse land on your arrow or gun barrel? Could you have the composure to calmly film it as it stood and made a series of grouse sounds? This clip is way too funny.
