November

If there is one month we wait for, its November. November is the magic month that defines us as deer hunters. Deer hunting and the month of November are synonymous, across this great land of ours. The fabric of America is woven with deer hide, it’s been that way for200 years and it will continue for to be that way for 200 more.

Deer in November

Deer spend the majority of their time on earth staying alive, they eat sleep and stay out of harm’s way. Their mission in life is to stay alive and they are good at it. But something happens in November that changes the game, deer go from survival mode to fulfilling their biological role to reproduce or as it is written, “Go forth and Multiply”. In addition to staying alive deer in November are occupied with reproduction. We call it the rut and its what deer hunters across America wait for each year.

Does are receptive to a buck’s advances for a few days each year and that few days generally occurs sometime in November (at least in 90+ percent of the cases in N. America. Bucks breed a receptive doe multiple times in a 2-day period before moving on to the next doe that is willing to have them. It’s all over in a few weeks and the herd can get back to their primary mission of staying alive.

Woods Work

Keeping track of what your deer are doing is about all the woods work you need to occupy yourself with in November. But don’t take this job lightly, what you learn about your deer this month will determine your woods work for the rest of the year. Go to the woods, pay attention and develop next year’s plan, if you are a deer hunter your work in the woods is never done.

Hunting 365

Deer hunting in November is why we exist as deer hunters. You may be a tracker, or a still hunter, or part of a gang that “pushes” the woods every weekend. However you hunt deer, now is the time to do it. The season’s open so get out there and do it! Football can wait till January, it’s time to go deer hunting.

The “rut” is the Holy Grail of most deer hunters. It’s the time when the bucks are chasing does all over the woods with love on their minds. Nothing beats hunting a good rut, that’s the time you must be in the woods. To let you in on a little secret, the rut makes good hunters of us all.

Hunt the rut and hunt the days after the rut (you never can tell when it is over). It’s game on for the rest of the month.
